Animal Biotechnology
Animal Biotechnology Laboratory at Department of Biotechnology focuses on Mammalian Molecular Genetics, Cancer Genomics and Homologous Recombination (HR) DNA repair using RAD51 proteins as model system. It is important to identify and perform functional analyses of HR components and delineate how defects in them contribute to carcinogenesis and common chromosomal abnormalities. Combinatorial chemotherapeutic approaches targeting multiple pathways would be the way forward in cancer therapy field. One such approach employed in our lab targets functional inhibition of RAD51 protein via its ATPase activity or its protein interactions. The lab focuses on designing targeted nanogel based formulations to directly deliver these inhibitors to the tumour site or cancer cells. Use of such targeted nanogels with combination of these drugs will be useful in designing the most efficient and effective treatment strategies for cancer. The mechanism can safely supplement the already used therapeutic regimens or can be used by adding drugs within the mix to induce DNA damage. The lab also strives to identify and test new targets and small molecules as well plant-based inhibitors using cytotoxic and cytogenetic studies.
