Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) is a significant initiative launched by the Government of India to address the multifaceted challenges faced by girls and women across the country. This tri-ministerial effort, involving the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health & Family Welfare, and Human Resource Development, is designed to tackle the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and promote women's empowerment throughout their life cycle.
Launched on January 22, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scheme's primary objectives include raising awareness about issues such as declining CSR, gender inequality, and the need to protect and empower girls. The initiative emphasizes the importance of ensuring the education of the girl child and her active participation in society, aiming to break down traditional barriers that hinder the development and progress of women.
Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao also strives to prevent child marriages and address the safety concerns of girl children, including protection from physical and mental harassment and domestic violence. By focusing on these critical aspects, the scheme contributes to creating a safer and more nurturing environment for girls to grow and thrive.
The need for such an initiative becomes evident when considering the 2011 population census, which revealed a concerning trend of 943 females per 1000 males in India. The scheme, through its awareness campaigns, policy interventions, and community engagement efforts, seeks to reverse this trend and promote a society where the rights and well-being of every girl child are protected and prioritized.
