World Intellectual Property Day 2023

The MSME Development and Facilitation Office of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise in association with Brainware University organised the celebration of 'World Intellectual Property Day 2023' on April 26. The programme witnessed a host of eminent dignitaries speaking on the importance of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection.

Dr. Sushil Kumar Mitra, Ex-Deputy Controller, CIPAM emphasised on the theme this year which was the “can do” attitude of women inventors, creators and entrepreneurs around the world and their ground-breaking work. The speakers focused on the fact that 'Women are born managers' and how their entrepreneurial ventures went unrecognised for a long time.

The inaugural session was followed by a technical session where the importance of IPR, trademark, patents etc. were highlighted for the students.

The primary objectives of these programmes is to encourage the students towards creating something new - to be job creators rather than job seekers. IPR protection is an important aspect in this case. One needs to protect his or her ideas in order to prevent others to use them without authorisation.

The keynote address was delivered by Pradip Kumar Das, Joint Director, MSME - DFO. He went on to explain the reason behind the trademark - to maintain the quality parameters. Trademark is applicable in case of an individual property while Geographical Index is applicable in case of a group. Somnath Chattopadhyay, Advocate highlighting the necessities of the trademark process.

Tarak Kansabanik, Assistant Director, MSME-DFO, Kolkata gave an insightful talk on commercialising a product and how to become an entrepreneur!
