Broadening the horizons

An online workshop on Application of Web GIS was organised by the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Brainware University, on March 13, 2021.

The objective was to elaborate on how Geospatial Information System (GIS, also known as Geographic Information System) uses web technology to communicate between a server and a client. The guest speaker, Ms Reema Gupta, senior GIS developer, National Informatics Centre, Delhi, was invited to grace the occasion. The workshop took place over Google Meet with over 80 students of BTech CSE and Diploma CSE.

Ms Gupta explained: “WebGIS brings analytics to spatial or geographic data in a way that wasn’t possible before. Earlier, spatial data had to be processed, edited, modified and extracted to answer a predetermined set of questions. Now, the data is transformed into web maps or services that are mashed up with different layers into a webGIS, which provides the possibility to answer any sort of questions.”

Thereafter, the speaker highlighted the diverse set of analytical functions that GIS offers. This was followed by a lively interactive session with the participants.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by the head of the department, Dr Debdutta Pal.
