Changing the world for the better

Women's empowerment is talked about nowadays in many avenues however this is not a contemporary issue. For as long as women have lived they have loved and worked and struggled to create a path for themselves. Today the freedom that is guaranteed to women has been won with the blood and toil of our foremothers. On December 14, 2021 Brainware University in association with Candid Communication Ltd. had the occasion to invite illustrious film actress Ms. Arpita Chatterjee to share her experience playing the role of Indian dance and music maestro Gauhar Jaan for our Webinar on Women Empowerment on December 14, 2021 at 3:45 PM.

Ms. Chatterjee introduced us to the life of one of the most prominent singers and dancers of the recent past from our very own city of joy- Kolkata, Gauhar Jaan. This webinar provided us an opportunity to talk about an epitome of women empowerment. From her we learn about the unfettered spirit of the artist, an undefeated attitude towards life, and a courage to persist in the face of adversity. Gauhar Jaan was deeply involved with the Gramaphone Company of India and she was one of the major promoters of Hindustani style of music. In her lifetime, she recorded more than 600 songs from 1902 to 1920, in more than ten languages, including Bengali, Hindustani, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Arabic, Persian, Pushto, French, and English.

Ms.Chatterjee shared experiences from her own life and the struggles she faced to make it big in an male dominated industry. She inspired the audience by confirming that the key to success lies in not accepting defeat. “In order to learn about dancing and singing better and immerse myself in the character I trained really hard. I hired trainers and professionals. What I didn’t do is take things for granted or give up. You must do the same,” she said.

The session ended with a motivational message from Ms. Chatterjee who said that each time a woman breaks the limits imposed on her and dares to fight for herself she becomes an inspiration for countless others.
