Seeds of Innovation: Rewriting the Genetic Code of Tomorrow’s Crops Biotechnology & IIC 11-09-2026
The Department of Biotechnology organised a seminar titled “Seeds of Innovation: Rewriting the Genetic Code of Tomorrow’s Crops” for B.Sc. and B.Tech. Biotechnology 5th-semester students. Dr. Soumitra Paul, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, University of Calcutta, delivered an insightful session on genetic engineering and genome-editing technologies in modern crop improvement. The seminar covered recombinant DNA technology, transgenic crops, gene silencing, and CRISPR-Cas-based genome editing, along with their applications in improving crop nutrition, productivity, pest resistance, and stress tolerance. Students also gained awareness of biosafety, environmental, ethical, and regulatory considerations associated with genetic technologies. The session helped bridge theoretical biotechnology concepts with real-world agricultural challenges and encouraged students to explore research and innovative approaches for developing sustainable, climate-resilient, and food-secure crops.
