From Craft to Commerce: Understanding Entrepreneurship at Janbazar Leather Cluster Management, Commerce & IIC 16-03-2026

The Department of Management and Commerce, in collaboration with the Institutions’ Innovation Council (IIC) and in association with IQAC of Brainware University, organized an insightful industrial visit titled “From Craft to Commerce: Understanding Entrepreneurship at Janbazar Leather Cluster” on March 16, 2026, at the New Market Area, Dharmatala, Kolkata. The visit was designed to provide students with practical exposure to entrepreneurship and small-scale industrial operations by exploring the renowned Janbazar Leather Cluster, known for its traditional craftsmanship and thriving local businesses.

During the visit, students observed the complete journey of leather production, from raw material procurement to the creation of finished products. They interacted directly with artisans and small business owners, gaining valuable insights into leather processing techniques, design development, stitching, finishing, pricing strategies, customer management, and market linkages. These interactions offered students a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with operating businesses in the unorganized sector while highlighting how traditional skills can be transformed into sustainable entrepreneurial ventures.

The visit concluded with a reflective discussion session where students shared their observations and learnings, followed by guidance from faculty members. By bridging classroom concepts with real-world business practices, the initiative successfully enhanced students’ entrepreneurial awareness, practical business understanding, and appreciation for grassroots industries. The event also aligned with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, reinforcing the importance of innovation and sustainable industrial development in traditional sectors.
