Smart Phone Content Creation and Environmental Reporting Media Science and Journalism 14-09-2026
What happens when a smartphone stops being just a camera and becomes a tool for public-interest journalism?
For the first-semester students of BSc Digital Media Science & Journalism, the answer unfolded beyond the classroom, as they stepped into Jyotinagar and Cossipore to explore the ongoing drinking water concerns faced by local residents . Through ground-level observation, meaningful interactions, and responsible reporting, students experienced how a public concern can become a powerful story – turning curiosity into investigation and classroom learning into real-world journalism.
The activity was led by industry professional and visiting faculty Mr. Panchanan Poddar, Journalist and Founder of HOW, along with faculty member Mr. Anarghya Mondal.
Armed with smartphones and guided by journalistic curiosity, students interacted with local residents, observed the situation on the ground, asked questions, verified information, and documented their findings through audio-visual content.
More than learning how to create content, they experienced what it means to report with purpose—understanding the importance of accuracy, ethics, empathy, and responsible engagement when telling stories that affect real communities.
Because a smartphone can capture a moment.
But journalism gives that moment a voice.
