Discussing the two spectrums – gender and sexuality; a seminar on ‘Gender Sensitivity’ by the Department of Psychology

While interacting with the students from the Department of Psychology, Aritra Chatterjee, Clinical Psychologist looked at gender from multiple perspectives, not only through the LGBTQ+ lens. “Gender is associated with class, caste, belonging etc.,” she said. With the aim of generating an awareness on gender sensitivity, Chatterjee started from the basics where she clarified the distinction between ‘sex’ and ‘gender’. She was present to address the students at a seminar on ‘Gender Sensitivity’ organised by the Department of Psychology.

Academic Researcher and social worker Bonnya Kar who is also a poestess and vocal artist was also a speaker at the seminar. She shared several anecdotes from her childhood that highlighted how she felt trapped being a woman trapped in a man’s body. The two different spectrums – gender and sexuality – were highlighted clearly by the speakers, making it clear to the audience. The speakers also focused on the need of a safe and secure campus so that an individual has the opportunity to explore their gender identity.

This was indeed a thought-provoking session for the students as well as the faculty members.
