International Webinar on Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, the fight for Press Freedom and its
relevance today Media Science and Journalism 08-09-2026
The Department of Media Science and Journalism organised an international webinar on “Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, the Fight for Press Freedom and Its Relevance Today” on 8 September 2026 from 7:00 PM onwards. The webinar focused on the historical significance of Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, its contribution to the development of Indian journalism, and the continuing relevance of press freedom. The session aimed to familiarise students with the history of the publication, examine James Augustus Hicky’s experiences in the struggle for freedom of expression, and help them understand the importance of journalistic independence in the contemporary media landscape.
The webinar featured an expert-led discussion on the historical context of Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, censorship, freedom of expression, and the challenges faced by journalists in the past and present. Students actively participated through questions and discussions, connecting the historical struggle for press freedom with contemporary journalism. The programme enhanced students’ understanding of the evolution of Indian journalism and encouraged critical reflection on media freedom, censorship, and the responsibilities of the press in a democratic society.
