“Matribhasa Diwas” celebration: Brainware University

India’s greatest strength lies in its rich diversity of culture and in the rich cadences of the different languages in which one learns to speak and think. In spite of the varied experiences and languages, every Indian is connected by a shared love and respect for their mother tongues. The “Matribhasa Diwas”, celebrated across India on 21 February 2020 aims to nurture deep respect and understanding of different Indigenous languages amongst Indian citizens to uphold this invaluable resource.

The students of Brainware University enthusiastically celebrated their linguistic heritage by participating in various events such as cultural programs, debates, recitation competition on the occasion of “Matribhasha Diwas”. In the opening address Dr. Gourab Chatterjee (H.O.D, English and Literary Studies) stressed on the importance of promoting the learning of different Indian languages in addition to one’s own mother tongue amongst students to gain a better understanding of their fellow countrymen. Students presented thought provoking ideas on multilingualism during the debate arguing for or against the topic: “Multilingualism in India: Resource or Burden”. It was gratifying to see the students presenting complex arguments in such a succinct manner in their own respective languages.

The program concluded on an enthusiastic note with students reciting verses from various celebrated Bengali and Hindi poets. This event promoted a complexity of cultures and ideas amongst the students and was a big success.
