Hybrid Mushroom Cultivation

Hybrid Mushroom on display

Mushroom are macro-fungal community, diversified worldwide and classified into major three groups; i) edible, ii) medicinal and iii) poisonous. Edible mushrooms further classified into several types like; oyster (Pleurotus species), shiitake (Lentinula species), button (Agaricus species), paddy straw (Volvariella species), milky (Calocybe species) and so on. However, cultivation of edible hybrid mushroom (pfle1p, an oyster-shiitake hybrid) has been started from middle of December at Brainware University by Dr. Pijush Mallick, Head of the Department, Department of Biotechnology.

Hybrid Mushroom Cultivation

Oyster mushroom generally requires paddy straw as substrate for fruiting whereas shiitake requires tree logs for fruiting. This hybrid was developed targeting to introduce the potential traits from both the parents. The interesting fact is that this hybrid contains ‘beta-glucan’, an anti-cancerous agent which is inherited from shiitake. Technology for this hybrid mushroom cultivation on simple paddy straw maintaining its taste, flavor, quality including anti-cancerous beta glucan is successfully established and already commercialized earlier. Here, at Brainware University, the cultivation technology of the said hybrid mushroom is being used and successfully developed fruit body.
