Then out of the gloom appears a glimmer of hope, with the line: “Paar aachhey go paar aachhe – paar aachhe kon deshe?” an assurance, possibly to a friend, of a shore across the sea, although devoid of a destination. This line is surely one of Tagore’s most enduring among his lyrics. As a matter of fact, Ayyub adds, “I have not found such a rich expression of tired, hopeless, pained thoughts in the writings of any other poet.” Tagore starts the song by contemplating the final destination of the path, asking where it ultimately leads and what awaits at its end. This existential inquiry sets the tone for introspection and a search for meaning. The lyrics beautifully capture the universal human experience of grappling with desires and aspirations, questioning where they all merge and find resolution. This Rabindrasangeet transcends time and resonates with listeners across generations. It prompts introspection and invites individuals to reflect on their own journeys, desires, and the universal quest for meaning. Tagore was 72 years old when he penned this composition. This adds a poignant layer of wisdom and reflection, demonstrating his lifelong dedication to exploring the intricacies of the human experience.

English translation (Lyrics): Pather sesh kothay

Where does the path end, what awaits there?

So many desires, all the endeavours, where do they blend?

Waves of tears rise at the shore, darkness looms ahead,

The shore offers solace, but in which land?

Today I think to myself whether I am chasing illusions, alas

I realize there is no end to this thirst, fear grips my mind as

With a broken helm, torn sails, my sorrow rows towards oblivion

Some useful information: Pather sesh kothay

Written in: 1933

Tagore’s Age: 72

Published in: Chandalika Dance-Drama, 1933

Parjaay (Category): Puja (Worship)

Upa-parjaay (Sub-category): Sesh (Ending)

Taal: Kaharba

Raga: Pilu

Notation: Swarabitan

Swarabitan: Vol. 56

Notation by: Anadikumar Dastidar

Purpose of the presentation

———————————

Tagore’s music resonates with people from all walks of life.
