The only barrier between you and your dream job, is the interview session. The basic purpose of any interview is to assess or evaluate the skills and abilities of the candidate. The recruiters basically want to determine whether or not have the knowledge of the areas you claim to have an expertise on in your resume.

 

Below we enumerate some of the most important tech questions you might encounter during an interview for a tech ( or tech related) position :

 

What Development Tools Have You Used? This question is asked to assess whether or not you have experience in using the tools of your trade. A tech expert is supposed to excel or at least be comfortable with the tools of their profession. For example if you are appearing for the role of web developer , then you are expected to have knowledge of how to operate tools like PHP, NodeJS, HTML5 or Markup language, the latest version of HTML or XHTML, programming languages such as Python, showcase GitHub projects etc.

 

What Languages Have You Programmed In? In the IT sector coding skills are a must. Engineers in the IT or software field no matter their role are expected to be an expert or at least comfortable in various programming languages. If you are seeking a career in the IT you are expected to know programming languages like Java, Javascript, Ruby on Rail etc. The more an expert coder you are, the more valuable are you as an IT engineer.

 

What are your certifications ? Certifications count for a lot in the IT sector. This is because certifications are awarded by established IT giants, which enjoy a hallowed reputation in the IT sector. Certifications are a testament of your expertise in a specific skill and dedication. So if you have certifications from CISCO, Oracle, Red Hat, Project Manager ( PMP) then do showcase them during interviews.

 

How Did Your Education Prepare You For This Position? : This question is asked to ascertain how passionate you are about engineering. Many engineers are unwilling ones who just study engineering for the sake of it. The employers will want to ascertain whether you are passionate about what you do. So if you have done any relevant industry projects now is the time to talk about it….

 

What was the last project you worked on? What was your role? : Don’t fib (lie) if you were not in the position of a project manager or leader. If you are very young and just starting out your career, the employer won’t really expect a seasoned project management skills from you. If you were in the role of tech support, or in a junior role, admit it, and focus on how you contributed to that project, how you helped the manager solve a problem, what you learnt from it.

 

What are your IT strengths and weaknesses? This question is again aimed to know how much adept you are at IT skills. Showcase the softwares and tools you are really good at, but also don’t outright say you are terrible at some tools/software. Just say you are in a continuous learning process and hope to gain expertise in more IT tools.
