Nursing students take part in Community Health and Wellness Fair

Nursing students take part in Community Health and Wellness Fair

On December 24, the students from Institute of Nursing of Brainware University took part in a “Community Health and Wellness Fair” at Ramkrishnapur Young Star Club. The goal of the event was to raise awareness regarding healthcare among the masses, as well as provide them with basic health check-ups.
A batch of 84 students conducted the health check-up and demonstrations of several necessary healthcare protocols. Essential demonstrations of first-aid management for dog bites, poisoning, and choking were made, among others. Alongside the public, the students also benefitted from the hands-on application of theoretical knowledge they had received in the classroom. The event not only raised awareness among the public regarding the necessity of basic healthcare, but also promoted a spirit of teamwork among the participating students!

Popular 'Foodman' Chandrasekhar Kundu highlights the importance of computer knowledge on 'World Computer Literacy Day'

The Computational Science department of the university hosted a seminar on the occasion of World Computer Literacy Day on 2nd December. The event was graced by Chandrashekhar Kundu, popularly known as Foodman among the masses, for his contribution to eradicating hunger and illiteracy.
Kundu hosted an interactive session with the students where he guided them about realising the necessity of imparting computer literacy to those that are unaware, as well as how to achieve that. The students also exhibited interesting posters and models to highlight the cause.

The multi-tasking ninjas of the medical industry: A seminar on 'Recent Advancements in Neuroscience and Orthopaedics' for the AHS students

"We cannot call someone a full-time Multitasking Ninja so we call them Physician Assistant," said Dr. Sharjeel Khan, Consultant Orthopaedics said while addressing the Allied Health Science students at a seminar on 'Recent Advancements in Neuroscience and Orthopaedics'. He highlighted the roles and responsibilities that these multi-tasking ninjas have to perform all day long to keep the patients safe.
Consultant Neurologist Dr. Jasodhara Chaudhuri spoke about the career prospects of the AHS students and how they can be an asset to the medical industry!
Dr. Sharjeel Khan and Dr. Jasodhara Chaudhuri were present at the seminar on December 3, 2022. There has been a shortage of medical workers in India and Allied Health professionals play a crucial role in the medical industry. At present, there are a lot of career opportunities for the AHS students that were highlighted by the two speakers.

Webinar on “Textbook to Technology: Application of Quantum Mechanics in Material Engineering

On December 4, 2022, the Department of Physics organised a webinar on “Textbook to Technology: Application of Quantum Mechanics in Material Engineering.” The session was conducted by Mr. Sudipta Kanungo, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, IIT Goa. He gave an insightful presentation on the uses and properties of a unique material, Graphene, and how it can be a potential component of electronic devices in the future. Mr. Kanungo kept the students drawn into the discussion with his lucid presentation, and patiently interacted with all of them. The session indeed was an interesting and informative one for the students!

Of stock market and bar charts: Seminar on Financial Awareness

On December 7, the School of Management and Commerce organised a seminar on Financial Awareness. The session was conducted by Mr. Biswanath Chakraborty, senior faculty member of Bombay Stock Exchange Institute Ltd. In the hour-long seminar, students received practical demonstrations of how to analyse the share market, and what are the necessary factors to be considered before investing.
As explained by Mr. Chakraborty, “money” being the universal language known by all, it is imperative for the students to understand where to invest, and especially, how to invest. He guided the students to technically analyse the stock market by introducing them to a live capital market, wherein they were further instructed about bar charts, supply and demand, and understanding moving averages. The lively, interactive session proved to be of great help to the students!

Guests from CodeClouds speak to CSE students about executing business strategies

On December 9, the Department of Computer Science Engineering organized a technical seminar to give an overview of the industry to the students. The session was conducted by Mr. Subhojit Ganguly, COO, CodeClouds and Mr. Biplab Pal, VP and R&D CodeClouds. Mr. Ganguly spoke to the students about the necessity of challenging their weaknesses, and further advised them to inculcate awareness, knowledge and empathy in their lives, to achieve both personal and professional success.
With the help of “Project Life Cycle”, Mr. Biplap Pal highlighted the job opportunities and options available to students after BTech in CSE/IT, especially as a fresher in the industry. He emphasized the importance of improvising to learn what is new in the industry. He introduced a plan called “PDCA” (Plan, Do, Check and Act) to ensure continuous growth for future IT professionals. The session proved to be a huge success owing to the interactive discussion.

The Department of Media Science and Journalism, Brainware University organised a webinar titled ‘Economics of Media’ on December 9, 2022. The speaker for the webinar, Dr D. Punitha, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Communication, Women’s Christian College, Chennai addressed over 60 students of different departments of Brainware University on a wide range of issues pertaining to the realities and future challenges of the Indian media industry.
Dr Punitha spoke on business models used for different media, sources of revenue, and modes of investments for media operations. She also stressed on how scholars began to research many different marketplaces and businesses as the study of economics became more polished, applying economic concepts and principles to a variety of fields, including media and the development of media economics would be aided by the growing interest in this field.
The hour-long session was followed by a question and answer session.

Motivational speech by Innovator: How to improve your decision making through innovation?

Dr. Ram Mukkamal who is currently working as a Plant Manager, New Products/Technology Validation and Operational Excellence in Avery Dennison, North America spoke to the students at a webinar on 'Improve your Decision Making with Design Thinking and Innovation'. The session was organised by the Institution's Innovation Council in collaboration with the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology.
While addressing the students, the motivational speaker, Dr. Mukkamal discussed how to design a product as per the customer's needs. Furthermore, he discussed the two very important aspects of innovation - product and market design and also how to satisfy the unmet customer need. It was a wonderful discussion about the innovation process framework in the field of pharmacy. In the interactive session, he discussed the financial aspect, cash flows and market research of Pharmaceutical innovation.
The personal experiences shared by Dr. Mukkamal helped students to realize the practical things that an innovator faces and how self-belief and right decision making can help them to be successful.

Learning to encode a story into a serial with Sromona Ghosh

In a workshop held by the department of Media Science and Journalism on December 10, Sromona Ghosh (Senior Producer, Zee Bangla) presented an overview of the world of teleseries to aspiring storytellers.
She outlined how television series differ from other media content, especially when it comes to writing, and guided the students on the correct way of developing a television series, by amalgamating all the qualities of a feature film in a single episode. She further stressed upon how Indian serials have stayed true to their core, despite the different modes of delivery, which makes it imperative for the makers to understand how to prevent the audiences from flipping channels. The workshop was a success owing to a slew of curious questions, coupled with informative discussions.

The application of AI-ML in varied sectors: Online workshop discusses the current scenario and possibilities

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) organised a one-day workshop on 'AI-ML (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) Applications in Signal Processing: Research and Innovation Perspective' on December 10, 2022. Dr. Mohammad Azharuddin Laskar, Data Scientist, Armsoftech (Chennai) conducted the workshop.
In the course of the workshop, the students got a basic idea of different types of signals and their analysis in the AI-ML domain. The domain provides tremendous scope for research, innovation, and development owing to growing automation across different sectors.
One must note that at present, the researchers in an almost endless number of fields are embracing AI and ML to develop tools and systems that can predict and adapt to a wide range of changing situations, optimize system performance, and intelligently filter signals.

National Energy Conservation Day 2022

The Institution Innovation Council in association with the departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering at Brainware University, jointly observed National Energy Conservation Day on December 14, 2022. A webinar was organised by the departments to stress the necessity of conserving energy. The students wholeheartedly participated through their speeches and poster presentations, which showcased their awareness regarding present energy consumption and conservation trends. Strung with informative discussions and presentations, the webinar propagated the need for saving our planet from the ravages of climate change.

Curving the uniqueness of oneself: CS professor conducts an intriguing calligraphy workshop

“Calligraphy is the most intimate, private, and spontaneous expressive means. Like a fingerprint or voice, it is unique with every person.” - German Zapf.
To bring out the uniqueness in every person, the university organised a 'Workshop on Calligraphy' for the 1st year students. Souvik Mitra, Assistant Professor, Department of Computational Science, this time stepped into a completely different role and intrigued the students in this conventional art form. The event took place in the Seminar Hall of the university on December 17, 2022.
"Calligraphy enticed me because I am an old schoolgirl. Pretty letters, pretty handwritings do stand out," said a 1st year student who participated in the workshop.

Educational Trip to Purulia for the students of Media Science and Journalism

The department of Media Science and Journalism, Brainware University, organised an educational trip to Purulia. The departmental students documented the life and livelihood of mask makers of Purulia during the three-day-long educational trip to the land of mask-makers &. Purulia is the land of Chau, a prominent dance form that has made the land artistically fertile for centuries. A judicious mix of dance, drama and acrobatics are performed by the Chau dancers, the art being inherited from the ancestors, said a sixty-year-old Chau performer. The masks are iconic and are the hallmark of Purulia Chau. The generations of mask makers have been dedicating their creativity to keep the tradition alive since the inception of Chau.

To curb another Bhopal Gas Tragedy: IIC organises 'National Pollution Control Day' at BWU

The 'National Pollution Control Day' is observed on December 2 to commemorate the loss of precious lives during the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Brainware University observed the day where the students and faculty members discussed how to control the use of plastic.
The event was organised by IIC in collaboration with the departments of Biotechnology and Agriculture. The students also got to hear a number of valuable lectures from the faculty members including one on depredating bacteria. The pollutants and their sources were also discussed by the students. The pollutants can be natural and can also be created by human activity, such as trash or runoff produced by factories.

On the occasion of World Aids Day, students from the Institute of Nursing visited Saptarshi Sangha Club to spread AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection on December 1, 2022.
The students put up a performance in front of the people to inform them about this disease! Still today, there are several misconceptions and taboo associated with this disease, the students from Brainware University took the lead to educate the neighbouring people regarding the spread of this infection!

Yet another moment of pride for Brainware University!
The faculty members and students of the Department of Computational Science collaborated to develop an IoT-based Smart Entrance System, which has been granted a patent by the Republic of South Africa! The time-consuming, yet mandatory Covid protocols of sanitisation and temperature check before entering public places, can now be conducted without the employment of manpower; the Smart Entrance System automatically detects the body temperature and Sp02 level of the public! It also instructs people to wear their masks if unworn. With the system running successfully, the department has boldly made a mark as far as Covid-related inventions are concerned!

Anxiety! Stress! Burnout!
These are a few common words associated with the current generation of employees. Have you ever wondered how much anxious an employee is? Or what is the amount of stress in the person's mind? Or the burnout capacity of a person?
Well, Brainware University has been working on that! Recently, a patent has been issued on the invention 'An Integrated Biometric Machine Learning Device to Measure Employee Stress, Anxiety and Burnout'. The device has been developed under the collaboration of Dr Shivnath Ghosh, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Brainware University and Ekata Deb, LLM Student, School of Law, Brainware University.

Skin detection app developed by CSE 1st-year students to aid dermatologists - A remarkable feat!

At Brainware University, the students are trained so that they can become responsible citizens of tomorrow! Two first-year students have come up with a product that is helping dermatologists.
Angshu Chakraborty and Sayan Chakraborty, first-year students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering have come up with an application that can detect the moisture level of human skin. The app helps in diagnosing skin problems and recommend suitable solutions.
"This android app will help dermatologists to detect whether the face is dry or moisturised. An added feature will give the mixed reading of the face," said the developers!
This feat is going to be a golden feather to ornament the crown of students' achievements.
Brainware University is really proud to have students with such foresight and more such developments are expected to come up in the near future!

Talent Hunt 2022: Freestyle solo dance competition to identify the talents

On December 3, the Boys’ Common Room at UB III saw the students putting their best foot forward (quite literally!) owing to the Freestyle Solo Dance Competition organised as a part of Talent Hunt 2022.
From Bollywood and belly dance, to folk and fusion classical, the students belted out stunning performances. The event saw a confluence of upbeat songs, versatile performances, and high energy! Ariyan Thapa was adjudged the winner by the judges and audience alike, for his stunning freestyling on peppy Bollywood songs. Akanksha Duari and Ananya Sengupta bagged the second position, while Biplab Giri and Shreejita Dey were placed third.
The exhilarated cheering of the students and encouraging judges made the evening a success. The event not only brought out the myriad talents of the students but also incited a healthy competitive spirit among them!

Tagore’s dance dramas staged by Law students

On December 2, 2022, the students from the Department of Law staged two dance dramas by Rabindranath Tagore, to address the theme of “Equal Opportunity for All.” Under the able guidance of Dr. Pounami Basu (Assistant Professor, Department of Law), the students staged Chandalika and Chitrangada to highlight the themes of untouchability and women empowerment, respectively.
Caste discrimination and the emancipation of women being increasingly important concerns of current times, the students did an excellent job of choosing dance dramas to showcase the causes. Tagore’s works being relevant across eras, provided a solid playground for the students to showcase their understanding of “equal opportunity” through their performative talents! The choreography, costumes, and music arrangement had been successfully done by the students themselves, making the event a perfect union of creativity and teamwork!
